It houses relics of Śākyamuni Buddha. The Wenshu Hair Pagoda is said to contain Mañjuśrī's hair, and the library holds over 20,000 volumes of sutras.
The largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery on Mount Wutai and the main venue for Yellow Hat (Gelug) ceremonies. Perched atop Vulture Peak, it was visited five times by Emperor Kangxi, who inscribed steles in Chinese, Mongolian, Manchu, and Tibetan. Emperor Qianlong visited six times.

The East Hall is a Tang Dynasty timber structure (built 857 AD), discovered in 1937 by Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin, disproving the Japanese claim that no Tang wooden architecture survived in China — a milestone in Chinese architectural history. Its Tang murals, sculptures, inscriptions, and timber frame are called the "Four Masterpieces."
The main hall was rebuilt in 782 AD (Tang Dynasty), making it China's oldest surviving timber structure. Though modest in scale, its elegant bracket sets and refined structure are invaluable for studying Tang architecture.
Known as the "Small Pilgrimage" — climbing 1,080 stone steps lets you worship all five manifestations of Mañjuśrī without trekking to each peak. Emperor Qianlong ascended twice and composed poems in praise.

Blue Temples (Chinese Buddhist monasteries) are named for monks' grey-blue robes, practicing Mahayana Buddhism. Yellow Temples (Tibetan Buddhist monasteries) are named for monks' yellow hats, following the Gelug (Yellow Hat) school. Today Mount Wutai has 32 Blue Temples and 15 Yellow Temples, two traditions coexisting in harmony for centuries.
Mount Wutai has been a pilgrimage destination for Han, Mongolian, and Tibetan Buddhists since antiquity. The Yuan Mongolian court embraced Tibetan Buddhism and built Yellow Temples here. Qing Manchu emperors used Mount Wutai as a bond with Mongolia and Tibet — Emperor Kangxi visited 5 times, Qianlong 6 times, using religion to maintain frontier unity. The four-script stele at Pusading (Chinese, Mongolian, Manchu, Tibetan) testifies to this multicultural heritage.
The "Great Pilgrimage" means trekking to all five peaks on foot — approximately 70km, usually taking 2-3 days. This is the most devout pilgrimage on Mount Wutai, passing through alpine meadows and cloud-shrouded ridges. The typical route starts from the East Peak, going clockwise through North, Central, West, and South peaks. The North Peak at 3,058m is the greatest challenge.
For those with limited time or stamina, climbing Dailuo Peak's 1,080 steps constitutes the "Small Pilgrimage." Respect Buddhist etiquette: remove hats in halls, keep quiet, don't photograph statues without permission. Great Pilgrimage requires proper preparation (fitness, gear, food, water). Be aware of altitude sickness at higher elevations. Some peak trails are rough — take care.
